Documents we typically ask for

  • A copy of your passport, including your Vietnam visa or exemption pages, or your temporary residence card
  • For people living in Vietnam: proof of your temporary residence (see our guide to temporary residence registration in Hanoi)
  • For people abroad: a notarized authorization letter and a copy of the agent's ID, which we prepare with you
  • Details of your stays in Vietnam, such as past addresses and dates

Using the certificate abroad?

The certificate is issued in Vietnamese only. For use abroad you will usually need a translation plus an apostille or consular legalization, depending on the destination country. We can handle these together with the certificate. Time limits apply too, for example some authorities only accept a certificate issued within the last 6 months.

Frequently asked questions

Who can apply for a Vietnam criminal record certificate?
Foreigners aged 16 or over who live in Vietnam, or who lived in Vietnam in the past, can request their own certificate. Leaving Vietnam does not take away that right.
I no longer live in Vietnam. Can you apply for me?
Yes. Former residents apply through the Ministry of Public Security's records department. We can act as your authorized agent, so you do not need to return to Vietnam. We confirm the documents and the authorization letter you need before we start.
What is the difference between Certificate No. 1 and No. 2?
No. 1 shows only unspent convictions. No. 2 shows the full history, including spent convictions. Both say there is no criminal record if you have none. Check which one the receiving authority asks for.
Electronic or paper certificate?
Both have equal legal validity in Vietnam, but an electronic certificate is meant for domestic use. If you need the certificate abroad, ask for the paper version, which can be translated and apostilled or legalized.
Do I need a translation, apostille or legalization?
Usually yes if you will use it abroad. The certificate is issued in Vietnamese only. Depending on the destination country you will need a translation and either an apostille or consular legalization. For applications from abroad, translation and notarization are included in our price; apostille or legalization is priced separately.
